When the owners of a stone-built property in the desirable village of Marple decided that their draughty old windows and doors needed replacing, they called on Droylsden Glass to help with the renovation.

The hardwood timber window frames in the early-Victorian period home were in a poor state of repair. Rot had set in, allowing air into the building and creating a cold and draughty atmosphere, especially in winter. The clients wanted a warm and comfortable place to bring up their family, so improved insulation was a high priority.

The house is in a conservation area, so care had to be taken to fit windows in keeping with the locale. Once we received planning approval, we used white foiled uPVC Spectus vertical sliding (VS) sash windows, which have all the good looks of wood-framed windows but won’t rot and need only minimal maintenance. The double-glazed units are ‘A’ rated, so they have excellent thermal efficiency, and we fitted the whole unit with a deep bottom rail, tilt and child restrictors.

Part of the refurbishment requirements was a new door. In keeping with the age of the property and conservation area concerns, the clients chose a composite ‘Ludlow’ door made by Solidor. These composites have a solid timber core from sustainable sources and are extremely strong, as well as highly thermally efficient.

Hardware options that were chosen included an Avantis multipoint lock with an Ultion security cylinder. The door was fitted with gold lever handles plus a letterplate, a knocker and a spyhole. Finally, a Stormguard aluminium threshold was added, and the door was painted in a handsome shade of red.
