Sympathetically Modernising a Traditional Home Whilst Preserving Its Character
Some properties require more than a straightforward window replacement. This beautiful home in Lindow, Wilmslow was one such project.
The property featured a number of distinctive architectural features, including original stone mullions and decorative glazing, which are important elements of its character and charm. However, the original timber windows had reached the point where they were beginning to impact the home’s comfort, security, energy efficiency and overall appearance.
The homeowners wanted to retain the traditional aesthetic that had attracted them to the property in the first place while benefiting from the improved performance, security and low-maintenance advantages offered by modern window and door systems.
Working closely with the homeowners and specialist contractors carrying out repairs to the stone mullions, we developed a solution that respected the building’s heritage whilst future-proofing it for many years to come.
A Heritage-Inspired Window Solution
At the heart of the project was the installation of 71 Deceuninck Flush Sash windows. Chosen for their authentic appearance and clean sightlines, the flush sash design sits naturally within character properties and provides a convincing alternative to traditional timber windows.
Finished in white uPVC with Infinity Seamless Weld technology, the new windows offer a refined appearance that complements the original architecture while significantly reducing the maintenance requirements associated with timber frames.
Beyond aesthetics, the windows also deliver substantial improvements in thermal performance, helping create a more comfortable living environment throughout the year.
Security was equally important to the homeowners. Each window was fitted with the Kubu Superior multipoint locking system, restrictor hinges, hinge protection devices and glass retention locks. Together, these features create multiple layers of security while maintaining ease of operation and everyday practicality.
A contrasting black-on-white flush sash design was also incorporated within the entrance porch, helping tie together the property’s traditional detailing and providing a subtle visual feature that complements the wider scheme.
Protecting Character While Improving Performance
One of the most interesting aspects of the project involved a large decorative glazed feature within the property.
Replacing this element outright would have risked changing the appearance of an important architectural detail. Instead, we proposed a secondary glazing system installed internally using low-E glass.
This approach allowed the homeowners to retain the original decorative glazing while benefiting from improved thermal performance, reduced heat loss and better acoustic insulation. The result is a warmer, quieter home without compromising the property’s character.
Security and Style Through Composite Doors
To further improve the property’s performance and security, three new GRP composite doors were installed to the utility entrance, rear porch and kitchen.
Finished in a striking black-on-white colour combination, the doors complement the replacement windows perfectly and enhance the home’s overall appearance.
Each door features an Avantis multipoint locking system together with an Avantis cylinder guard, providing enhanced protection against common methods of forced entry. The robust construction and modern security features provide greater peace of mind while maintaining the elegant appearance expected of a property of this type.
A Long-Term Investment in the Home
The completed project demonstrates how modern window and door technology can be successfully integrated into a traditional property without compromising the features that make it special.
By replacing ageing timber windows and doors with carefully chosen heritage-inspired alternatives, the homeowners have dramatically improved energy efficiency, comfort, security and acoustic performance whilst reducing future maintenance requirements.
Most importantly, the character of the property has been preserved. The repaired stone mullions, decorative glazing and sympathetic window design all work together to ensure the home retains its original charm while benefiting from the performance standards expected in a modern family home.

The homeowners now benefit from a more secure, quieter and energy-efficient home while preserving the architectural features that make the property unique.
